It’s real and it’s wrong… oops!
Last week, the West Side Journal published a newspaper with the date incorrectly, and proudly, displayed on the front page. Instead of noting the Thursday, May 24 date, it remained unchanged from the previous May 17 edition.
As I grabbed a copy of the newspaper walking into the office Wednesday morning and noticed the grievous error, I sank into a panic. I texted other members of the Journal team and, of course, my mother. All assured me it was not the end of the world and encouraged me to take it in stride.
I considered calling Cozumel officials to ask if my brain was on the beach, but wasn’t sure I could afford the shipping. I decided instead to have a laugh at myself and change the date for next week’s newspaper immediately.
I know my error caused confusion for readers, which is the last thing I want to bring as the news editor.
“Well, my newspaper has the wrong date on it and I’m just not sure if it’s real or not,” a reader told me over the phone.
I assured him the newspaper was real and let him know of the mistake I made. Surprisingly, I received few calls about the incident.
While a wrong date may not be earth-shattering, I find it vitally important for a news organization to readily and openly admit mistakes to readers.
The Journal strives to bring accurate, local news to your doorstep or favorite pick-up spot each Thursday. While I cannot promise there will never be another mistake, know that any time there is I fully intend to come to readers with it. I will always place the accuracy of the news in the highest regard.
Thank you for your patience and continued support of the Journal. My motto has, and continues to be, “report the news, highlight the community” and I feel blessed to work in a community that makes the second part so fun. Though I have only been behind the editor’s desk for six months, the West Side has made me feel right at home.
I look forward to bringing more correctly-dated newspapers to you each week. Should you ever have a comment, concern or story idea please do not hesitate to contact me at Editor@thewestsidejournal.com or call my office at 225-343-2540.
