The first Basketball for Autism event in West Baton Rouge was a success, coordinator and director of Stepping 4 Autism Deon Farr said.
The event brought together five teams of kids age 4-9 and four young adult teams to raise money for autistic children in the West Side Community. The organization raises money to purchase iPads and other wishlist items for children with verbal and nonverbal autism.
Farr said the event was a success, but she would like to see more parents come out to support and be open.
“It’s okay to have an autistic child and there are way and things we can do to help our children,” she said.
Farr plans to rent out a skating rink free to autistic children. This summer, she has planned a Football for Autism fundraiser as well as a back to school event.
“Why limit the things they can do? If we put work into it they can do everything anyone else could too,” Farr said.
