Another one of Brusly High School’s star athletes has signed on the dotted line, committing the next four years of her life to a home state university.
Taylor Shaw will be bringing her speed to Louisiana Tech when she joins its track and field team next school year.
“It is what I enjoy most as a coach, watching kids work hard and get the prize at the end and now be able to put themselves among a small percentage of people to be called collegiate athletes,” head girls track and field head coach Trent Ellis, who coached Shaw in track the past two seasons said. “She has been a great contributor to the track program and has set a standard for those behind her to follow.”
Shaw said that one of the things that drew her the most to Louisiana Tech was the straightforwardness of the coaches’ goals for her.
“The campus just had a really good vibe,” Shaw said. “The girls on the track team were really nice to me and took me in as one of their teammates.”
Shaw also said that she is looking forward to the whole college experience.
“This will be the first time I will be on my own,” Shaw said. “I can’t wait to be able to have a set schedule of practice and classes, and I think I’m most excited about actually practicing with my college team.”
Reflecting on her high school career, Shaw said she is really going to miss her team because they have all become such close friends.
She said that she never thought that she could bond with a group of girls the way that they did over the past two years, and she still can’t believe that they will all be going their separate ways in just a couple of months.
“I don’t think I can really express my feelings – maybe excited, anxious and nervous,” Shaw said. “It doesn’t seem really real to me yet. I don’t think it has actually hit me that I’ll be running track in college.”
Shaw had many influences in her track career, but the person she gives most credit to is her uncle, Chris Butler (a former Brusly High football and track star) who introduced her to track.
She also thanks her mom for being there to do “any and everything” for her.
“I also want to thank all of my coaches Terry Boyd, Dezaray Delmore, Reggie Williams, Edmond Donald and Trent Ellis,” Shaw said. “They have all molded me into the person I am today.”
