Gina Marks, 22, of Plaquemine, was killed in car crash in front of the Port Allen Walmart on Tuesday, May 23.
Marks was riding as a passenger in a pickup truck driven by her brother while travelling northbound on La. Hwy. 1 near Walmart, according to the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
Her brother attempted to pass another vehicle on the highway, but the vehicle sped up and began traveling side-by-side, West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s traffic supervisor Lt. Ken Albarez said.
As the two vehicles were travelling, another vehicle entered the highway and was broadsided by the pickup truck, Albarez said. The truck flipped into the service road near Hardee’s. Marks, who did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, Albarez said. The vehicle appeared to roll on top of her after she was ejected, he said.
The drivers of both vehicles involved in the accident had minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.
Albarez said traffic citations were issued but no arrests have been made. Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers.
It did not appear that the vehicles were racing, as previously stated in other reports, Albarez said.
