Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and that he intended to wage war against Jerusalem, he consulted with his officials and military staff about blocking off the water from the springs outside the city, and they helped him. They gathered a large group of people who blocked all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. ‘Why should the kings of Assyria come and find plenty of water?’ they said” (2 Chronicles 32:2-4).
What a brilliant strategy to defeat the enemy. First they built the walls of the city back. Secondly, all waters outside the city where the opponents of God’s people camped and planned the siege of the city were dried up. All the enemy’s nourishment was drained into the walled city of Jerusalem. A tunnel 1,750 feet long, at a precise grade fall of .6 percent 130 feet underground was chiseled through solid rock. Without a heavenly vision, the city would have surely perished.
When life seems to be attacking on every side, we need a heavenly vision and strategy to know how to cut off the enemy.
Stop Feeding the Enemy
One of the first things we should do when we are under attack is to find out if there is anything in our lives that the enemy can use as a foothold. This can be any number of things that we have not dealt with such as broken relationships, unclean habits, and undisciplined living. Cut off the enemy before he attacks by choosing to live a holy life sanctified for God’s use.
Hezekiah strengthened himself in preparation for the attack. He prepared the defenses and also made plenty of darts and shields. The word of God is our sword, according to Hebrews 4:12. With it we can be strong in God and defend ourselves from the enemy’s lies. We hold on to what we believe when the lies come, and we learn to trust God no matter what the enemy tries to tell us.
Recognize our Superiority in God
King Hezekiah spoke to the people about God’s presence being greater than anything that the enemy had to use against them. Whatever the odds are that are against us, we must remember that God is greater! Remember that even the attack of the enemy is a way that God will use to perfect us, and all things will work together for our benefit.
Let’s have a battle plan to build up holy walls of protection. Whatever feeds the enemy in our lives, cut it off!
