The church was organized in August of 1928 with 22 Charter Members and the help of several churches in Louisiana; FBC of Baton Rouge, Colliseum Baptist Church of New Orleans and Melville Baptist Church. The church first met in the City Hall and the Masonic Lodge until it purchased property and met into small houses that were moved onto the property . There were 22 Charter Members of the new church. Regular services were held under the leadership of Rev. Fred Bookster of Collseum Baptist Church. The first Pastor, Rev. Herring, was called in December, 1928.
There have been some highlights from this small rural church over the years. The Grosse Tete Baptist Church was begun as a Mission of the FBC Maringouin. Two former pastors have gone on to serve on the Foreign Mission Field. Rev. Randall Sledge served in Lima, Peru; and Rev. Harold Wicks went on to serve in Ogbomosho, Nigeria. The ministry of this church has contributed much to the Spiritual Life of this Community.
Presently the church is in a beautiful brick building on their own property. It is pastored by Rev. James Womack who recently celebrated 20 years as the Pastor.
The congregation will celebrate this anniversary on Sunday, August 26.
