The city of Port Allen’s public works department has begun work on a four- to five-year, $1.5 million road improvements program.
The first, $375,000 phase includes road improvements to the east side of La. Hwy. 1, specifically:
6th Street from Court Street to Rosedale Road
7th Street from Court Street to Rosedale Road
Palm Street from Courthouse Street to Marilyn Avenue
Harding Avenue from Avenue A to Avenue B
Avenue F from S. River Road to S. Alexander Avenue
On April 23, the Port Allen City Council unanimously authorized Mayor Richard Lee to accept the lowest of four bids for the first phase of the road improvements program.
The approximately $243,000 bid from Coastal Bridge Company, LLC remains under budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year which, Vincent said, will hopefully allow for improvements to one or two more roads within the first phase of the program.
Vincent and City CFO Audrey McCain both said that the city does not qualify for grants on the east side of La. Hwy. 1.
“On this side of town we can’t get grant money for that,” McCain said, “So we’re having to fund all of that.”
When asked how often Port Allen implements this type of road improvements program, Vincent said the roads could last up to 15 years.
“Hopefully we don’t have to fool with them again for another ten to 15 years,” he said.
June 30 is the intended substantial completion date for the project.
