Citizens of One Port Allen hosting Back to School event

The city of Port Allen will host a Back to School Extravaganza for students living in Port Allen in grades Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade on Monday, August 4, from 4-8 p.m. at the West Baton Rouge Community Center in Port Allen.

“We want to get the students excited about going back to school and also want to give them some supplies that they will possibly use,” said Rose Roché, chair of the development committee. “We’re just trying to get out in the community and do things to try to bring the community together.”

Quenisha Guss, event chair, agreed with Roché saying that the main goal of the event is to get the area’s young students excited about the start of school.

“It’s been a long summer,” said Guss. “We just want to get the kids motivated to get ready for school.”

Guss said that another goal the group, Citizens of One Port Allen, is trying to accomplish is to simply bring the community together.

“We want to let everyone know that we still care, no matter what negativity has gone on in the past, we just want to go ahead and erase that from our minds and start over. And we want to start with our kids,” she said. “I think the kids are the key. And I think that this back to school event will be a great start.”

Children will be able enjoy games, food, door prizes, and fun activities. All students will also be provided with a gift pack of school supplies during the event, which is sponsored by the city of Port Allen and Port Allen Development Committee, as well as Citizens of One Port Allen.

“This is our first time holding the event, and hopefully we’ll just have a lot of fun, get the students excited, and give them some things that will kick off their school year,” Roché said, adding that the event is for children of Port Allen residents.

“If you live in the city of Port Allen, that’s who it’s for – incorporated, unincorporated, as long as you pay a water bill (from the city).”

Students must register by July 28 to attend. Parents should go to the City Hall Utility office for the registration form.

Roché said that a school supply will be held Sunday, July 27 in the Wal-Mart parking lot in cooperation with UPS.

“We’re working in conjunction with other organizations to try to get the school supplies – so we will have a school supply giveaway at the end of the event,” she said.

Other organizations include Exxon, Delta Sigma Theta and the Port Allen Rotary Club.
