UPDATED-A shooting in the parking lot of Wal-Mart in Port Allen left a man dead Wednesday night, April 24.

The victim, Leon Banks, 36, of 57642 Truehope Lane in Plaquemine, was shot in the Wal-Mart parking lot on LA-1 around 8:45 p.m., and sustained wounds that would eventually kill him.

West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office Colonel Richie Johnson said that gunshots were exchanged by Banks and at least one other person.

According to one eyewitness, Banks was also struck by a vehicle in the parking lot.

After the gunfire, according to WBRSO, a car, driven by Alfred Watts III, 30, sped off with the victim headed into East Baton Rouge Parish, as the driver was attempting to get Banks to the hospital.

The vehicle was pulled over by police near the CATS terminal on Florida Blvd. in Baton Rouge.

Watts, also of 57642 Truehope Lane in Plaquemine, was arrested and charged with one charge each of felony possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance, according to Johnson.

Johnson said Monday morning that no one has been arrested and charged in Banks’ death yet, but officials have a suspect and expect to make an arrest soon.

“An arrest is definitely forthcoming,” he said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
