A team of relayers, walking from Atlanta, Ga., to Guatemala made their way through Port Allen Sunday and Monday spreading the idea of global transformation through positive leadership.

John Hull, 54, CEO of EQUIP Leadership, an organization started by Christian author John Maxwell, said that he and his team plan to trek across the south, through Mexico and into Guatemala where they will train Guatemalan leadership with transformational messages and strategies.

“We hope that Guatemala is more than just a place that we can implement these (materials), Hull said. “We hope that we can implement these materials, these principles and values-based leadership, others-focused-based leadership, transformational leadership. We hope that we can export that out into other countries around the world.

“Guatemala is our destination. We hope to transport this transformational message and strategy to other countries.”

He said that the strategy for global transformation will be announced in Guatemala City, Guatemala in June, once the relay from Atlanta comes to an end.

“The actual walk itself is our attempt as an organization to build a four-month runway, from March to June, where we can bring attention to needs in Guatemala,” Hull said. “On June 12, this relay will end in a stadium in Guatemala City with John Maxwell and the president of Guatemala. Our team will come walking in and we will finish this walk.”

Hull said that he and his team are walking at least 22 miles a day everyday, and have done so since March 4. He and others are walking to Loredo, Texas, where they will hand over the relay to the organization’s Mexico team on April 28. The Mexican team will walk through Mexico, arriving to the Guatemala border around June 1.

The Mexico and U.S. teams will, together, meet with their Guatemala partners and all will walk in the stadium in Guatemala City together as a sign of unity and friendship.

“We’ve walked 638 miles to this point,” Hull said Monday morning after walking westbound on U.S. 190 through Port Allen and Livonia.

He said that though EQUIP is a global organization, they have dedicated themselves to stopping in eight cities along the way, one being Baton Rouge, where they host forums about community transformation

“I promised all these leaders, we want to host in Atlanta twice a year for the next three years, a leadership institute for transformation,” he said. “We’re walking by a lot of areas that have need on this road between Atlanta and Loredo and we want to see what we can do to help.

“We want to be able to tell the story. We want to be able to encourage people”

EQUIP is an acronym for Essentials, Questions, User-friendly, Integrity, and Para-church, used by the Christian Research Institute, whose focus isto provide Christians worldwide with carefully researched information and well-reasoned answers that encourage them in their faith and equip them to intelligently represent it to people influenced by ideas and teachings that assault or undermine orthodox, biblical Christianity.
