Dr. Jonathon Szymanski recently turned in his resignation as principal of Port Allen Middle School and accepted the principal position at his Texas alma mater, Brazos High School.
The Wallis News Review, in Wallis, Texas, reported last week that Szymanski, a 1994 graduate of Brazos High School, “has come home.”
Following interviews of three finalists on July 15, Brazos trustees selected Szymanski to replace Lyle Ebner as Brazos High School Principal.
“The opportunity to lead Brazos High School to unprecedented academic achievement is a dream come true,” Szymanski told Wallis News Review Editor, Johnny Griffin. “I will do everything I can for the students.”
West Baton Rouge Schools Superintendent David Corona said that he understands Szymanski’s decision to return to his roots, but has mixed emotions at the resignation.
“He did a tremendous job at Port Allen Middle. But I clearly understand his motivation. I certainly support what he wants to do with his life, because he’s a good man,” Corona said adding that there may be an opportunity for Szymanski to become the superintendent in that community within a few years. “He’s from that community where he’s moving to. And his wife is from a community that’s only an hour from Brazos, Texas. So they’re more or less moving home with their two children and we wish him the absolute best.”
Following graduation from Brazos High, Szymanski completed his undergraduate work at Texas A&M University, received a Master of Education at St. Thomas University in 2003, a Master of Arts at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge (LSU) in 2007 and achieved a Doctor of Philosophy: Educational Leadership and Research at LSU in 2010.
He served as a public school administrator for eight years in the West Baton Rouge Parish School System in Louisiana.
“I’m from this community and I know the fine people who live here,” Szymanski said to the Wallis News Review. “Brazos gave me the opportunity to be where I am today and that is the opportunity I want to give these students. Brazos made my dreams become a reality and it is the honor of a lifetime to serve here.
“Our kids are our future and I want them to have every opportunity for success; with dignity, pride and class.”
Dr. Szymanski and his wife Lisa have a son Ty, 2-1/2 and a daughter Bella, born June 28. His parents are Jodie and Jeraldine Szymanski.
“I’m here to stay,” he said. “I can’t wait to enroll Ty and Bella in Brazos Elementary.”
Corona said that John Arrasmith will move into the position of PAMS acting principal for the 2013-2014 school year.
The WBR School Board will advertise for the permanent position of Port Allen Middle School Principal in May 2014.
