Departed this life on February 2, 2014 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge, LA. Born April 24, 1942 into the union of his parents, the late Ernest Harris Sr. and Maudras Roscoe Harris, he was 71 years old.
Jerome Harris was baptized at an early age at the St. Joseph Baptist Church in Plaquemine, LA and became an active member, former deacon, and Head of the Church Trustee Board. Jerome J. Harris gradua Attorney Jerome Joseph Harris, a native of Plaquemine and resident of Baton Rouge, ted from Iberville High School, Plaquemine, LA in 1960. He earned a B.S Degree in Business Administration from Southern University and A & M College, Baton Rouge in 1963 and joined the Southern University Comptroller's staff the following day. Harris remained in this post until he moved to integrate the Administrative staff of Allied Chemical Corporation, Baton Rouge, LA. Later, in 1966, Harris moved his family to Washington D.C. to work and seek further academic study where he joined the staff at United Planning Organization as Assistant Procurement Officer. Jerome Harris was appointed in 1969 as Director of Purchasing for the University of the District of Columbia. During the same year, he entered Howard University Law School, Washington, D.C. He enrolled and continued his study at Catholic University of America where he earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1972. Harris was later appointed as Director of Business Services at the University of the District of Columbia and served in this capacity until 1981. From 1978-80, Harris served as Legal Counsel for the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission under the administration of former President Jimmy Carter. Harris returned Louisiana in 1981 and began work as Special Assistant to the Southern University System Vice President for Finance, Business, and the Comptroller from 1981- 1997. Harris was employed at the Southern University Law Center (1997-2012) where he served as Associate Law Librarian, Coordinator of Grants, Contracts, and Special Projects for the Law Center. In 1999, Harris was appointed as Director of Financial Aid at the Southern University Law Center. Harris retired in July 2012 with more than 30 years of professional service at the university. Aside from state and government services Harris was Chief Financial Officer for Roscoe Mortuary Incorporated, a family-owned business located in Plaquemine, Louisiana. Harris was founder and owner of Harris & Harris Law Firm, located at 435 Europe Street, Baton Rouge, LA. He held membership in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Masonic Masons, Kiwanis, La State Bar Association, U. S. Supreme Court, 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, and U. S. Districts of LA (Eastern, Middle, and Western). Jerome Harris was married for 52 years to Edith Batiste Harris; they were blessed with two children, Michael L. and Maya L. Harris. Harris is survived by his wife Dr. Edith J. Harris, son Attorney Michael L. Harris, Sr. Baton Rouge, LA, daughter Judge Maya L. Harris Evans, Plano Texas; daughter-in-law Dr. Janet L. Armelin Harris; son-in-law Darren Wayne Evans; 5 grandchildren, Zana L. Harris, Michael L. Harris, Jr., Alexis L. Evans, Zoie L. Harris, and Jillian M. Evans.; brothers, Ernest Harris, Jr. (Mary) Plaquemine LA, Don Ray Harris (Betty), New Orleans LA, Carlton Harris (Odesta) Addis LA, and Carl Harris Plaquemine LA; sister, Imogene Harris-Webb, Baton Rouge, LA; in-laws Bobbie Knox (Jonnie), Lucien Adams (Brenda), Louis Adams (Patrica) of Baton Rouge, Eldric Adams (Glenda), Plaquemine, LA., Carl Batiste, Lois Adams, Doris Adams Snearl, and Annette Adams Bynum (Calvin), Brusly LA, and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews, and friends. Harris was preceded in death by his parents Ernest Harris Sr. and Maudras Roscoe Harris; maternal grandparents, Felix and Luzinka Coleman Roscoe; paternal grandparents, Henry and Emma Liggins Harris; uncle, Monroe J. Roscoe; 3 aunts, Myrtle Roscoe Gales, Irma Roscoe, and Dorothy Roscoe Henry. Roscoe Mortuary, 58635 Meriam St., Plaquemine, is in charge of arrangements. Visiting was from 1-4 pm., with a wake from 7 p.m. in Roscoe Mortuary on Friday, February 7, 2014. The Funeral Service took place at St. Joseph Baptist Church, 58106 Captain Talbot Harris Street, Plaquemine, LA on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 12 pm, with Pastor Randy Johnson officiating. Interment in Grace Memorial Mausoleum on Bayou Jacob Road, Plaquemine, Louisiana.
