Ruth Chloe Guidry Ewell died peacefully at her home in Baker, surrounded by her family, at 5am on Saturday morning, January 11, 2014.
Born in Addis on December 30, 1921, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dave H. Ewell, Jr., her grandson, Andrew K. Mixon, her parents, Andrew J. and Rema (Landry) Guidry, and her five older brothers. She is survived by her six daughters, Barbara Ewell (Jerry Speir) of New Orleans, Andrea (Don) Cox of Knoxville, TN, Jane Ewell-Hagan of Zachary, Mary (Don) Witty of Ventress, Libby (Donald) Morgan of Zachary, and Robin Ewell Jodry of Baker; and ten grandchildren, Dawn Powell, Lesley Freshour, Patrick Cox, Emily Hagan Hurst, Philip (Rusty) Hagan, Jr. , Chloe Hagan-Aguillard, Dave (Buddy) Mixon, Dale Mixon, Travis Morgan and Melanie Talley. She had thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. A graduate of Brusly High and business college, Ruth Ewell served as a member of the WAVES in the Navy during WWII. She then worked as a legal secretary, and for twenty years, owned and operated Lady Jayne's Fashions in Baker. She had a deep and abiding love for her faith and was a practicing Roman Catholic until the end of her life. Our special thanks to the Spears family, Mary Lou, Joy Marie and Kay, our neighbors and dearest friends for 60 years, and also to the generous women who cared for our mother with such kindness and respect following her stroke in 2000, especially Brenda Robinson and her family, and Josephine Hall. Pallbearers were her grandsons and Colt Ducote, while her sons-in-law will served as honorary pallbearers. A funeral mass was held at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Baker at 11 am Tuesday, January 14, with visitation from 9 am to 11 am.
