The Lady Panthers hit their stride, adding two more wins to their record this week after defeating both West Feliciana and Baker.
Last Tuesday, the Panthers demolished the W. Feliciana Saints in a 66-17 blowout.
“It was a huge win for us,” said Lady Panther head coach Shaeeta Williams. “It was a great game, and all the girls had a chance to play. [West Feliciana] scored a lot of points on several other teams, so for us to stop them and keep them from scoring proved that we can be a very good team.”
Madison Laprarie, Caitlyn Williams, and Shedricka Pierson all scored in the double digits for the Panthers.
“Brianna Granville was instrumental both offensively and defensively in the West Feliciana game,” said Williams. “She really stepped up and made huge shots for us.”
The Panthers had to fight for their next win as they took on the Baker Buffalos Saturday. After an intense battle, it was Brusly that grasped the victory with a 47-46 overtime win.
“In the beginning of the game, we came out and hit some great shots, but again it was our defense that got a lot of great steals,” said Coach Williams. “In the second half against Baker, Akiya Thymes had some key defensive stops.”
The Lady Panthers maintained their lead over the Buffs until the third quarter when Baker came back to top Brusly 34-33.
“It was a tough quarter,” said Williams. “They forced us to rush some shots. Baker took the lead in the third, but the great thing was it showed us how much we’ve grown and the maturity of our team. In the past, two-point leads have grown into a four-, six-, and eight-point leads. That’s the great thing about sports – at any moment, any team can make a run.”
Williams said the Lady Panthers’ defensive effort was noteworthy in the win.
“Both games, to me, were great defensive game,” said Williams. “Caitlyn Williams has been at the top of our defensive zone. She has a great instinct for the ball, and she’s been the key in getting our defense going. I think we’ll continue to be successful based on our defense. It’s pretty exciting to know that the rest of our district games are at home. It’s a great opportunity for us to finish the season really strong.”
