Brusly volleyballteam earns first state title tournament spot since 2003

RAYNE — The wait is over.

The Brusly volleyball team had not reached the state championship tournament since 2003. This year, they made it happen.

The Lady Panthers earned a trip to Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division III title tournament after a 3-1 win Monday against Rayne.

Brusly (25-13) won on sets of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21. Rayne won the second set 25-23.

“We finally played ball,” Brusly coach Karen Wooley said. “We stepped our game up.”

The Lady Panthers face E.D. White in the quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ponchartrain Center in Kenner.

“It was definitely our goal to go to district and state,” Wooley said. “We said at the start of the season that we were going to make sure we’d go to state – and we did it without seniors.

“The season started off rough … really bad,” she said. “There were some games in the start

where we thought we really could’ve played better, but it really felt good for us to have it go right at the end.”

Johnae LeBlanc paced the Lady Panthers with 18 kills, four aces and one dig. Teammate Chloe Richard had 13 kills, two aces, one block and 10 digs.

Kylie Tolar chalked five kills, 35 assists and two digs. Carlie Comeaux finished with one kill and 27 digs.
