Port Allen won the boys and girls events for the annual meet last Thursday in the Brusly Invitational.

The Lady Pelicans racked 166 points and the boys compiled 127.

Only 13 points separated the PAHS boys from runner-up Brusly, but the Port Allen girls breezed runner-up Live Oak (97) and the rest of the pack. BHS took fourth with 63, barely behind False River Academy (65).

The PAHS boys won all but one field event, while Brusly took the top spot in five running events.

Darian Claiborne led the pack in the javelin (163.11) and discus (130.4), while Telson Allen took first in the high jump (6-0) and Jarius Turner topped the pole vault event (11.6).

Brusly raced past competition in the running events thanks to Terrence West, who placed first in the 110-meter hurdles (15:05) and 300-meter hurdles (40:78). Orlando LeJeune led the 800-meter dash (2:11).

The tight race demonstrated what the Pelicans can expect in the district competition at E.D. White next month, coach Leonard Parker said.

“We’ve got a month before the start of district, so it gives us time to work on things,” he said. “You really have to see what the other teams can do before you head into the district meet.

“Brusly looks really strong, with Woods and West – they’re really good,” Parker said. “But you can’t leave out E.D. White, St. James, St. Charles and Donaldsonville. The championship will come down to coaching moves and depth.”

The last name Lee figured prominently for Port Allen girls events.

Rhynell Lee led the 100-meter (12:99) and 200-meter dash (26:49). Rhecie Lee placed first in the 800 (2:51).

Rhecie and Rhynell Lee were on the 4-by-200 meter relay with Jmyreha Douglas and Keisha Thomas. Rhynell also competed on the 4-by-100 meter relay team that finished first for PAHS (52:68).

Rhecie Lee topped

jump (4-8) and Thomas outpaced competition in the long jump (15-9 1/2).

Brusly senior Ashley Wheeler led the way in the 100-meter hurdles (17.82) and the triple jump (35-3).
