Two defending state champions from the Brusly High School wrestling team now have a chance to compete across the globe.
Barrett Sanchez and Trevor Schermer were selected to compete in wrestling tournaments in Australia and New Zealand the first week of July.
Both grapplers recently compl eted their junior years.
Schemer is a three-time state titlist who won gold in the 134-lb. division at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Championship Meet Feb. 16 in Kenner.
The two Panther wrestlers are the only Louisiana competitors invited to the worldwide meet.
Brusly successfully defended its Division III state title at the LHSAA tournament.
Schermer and Sanchez will represent the North Central division on the American contingency.
The two grapplers will compete two days in New Zealand, and take part in a beach wrestling competition the next two days in Australia.
Competition will take place in dual meets and individual wrestling.
Three divisions of American grapplers will head into competition at the events.
Sanchez brought home his second championship after a win in the 112-lb. category in the 2013 state meet.
Fundraising projects are underway for the event. A trust fund has been set up at Iberville Bank to accept donations to cover the costs of travel for the event.
