For the first time in school history, Port Allen High’s volleyball team will be attending camp together.
Last summer, four members of the team went to Southern University, but this year, all 16 players on the team’s roster will be attending a two day camp at Louisiana State University.
On Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, the girls will be practicing for 12 hours each day.
“I think they’ll learn a lot, and that’s the main thing,” said the Lady Pelicans’ Head Coach, Wayne Conaway.
In addition to playing summer ball and practicing throughout the month of June, the girls have been training and conditioning with 2009 Port Allen High School alumnus, Siedda Herbert in preparation for the camp.
“We train for two hours a day, Monday through Thursday. We do drills to increase their flexibility, general strengthening of the body, and cardio,” Herbert said. “ I am just trying to show the ladies how far discipline can take you.”
Herbert, who was a multi-sport star during her tenure at PAHS, recently graduated from LSU after spending four years on the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams.
The Lady Pels saw success in their 2013 season, earning the title of District 2 champions for the first time since 1995.
2013 Port Allen graduate Gabrielle Thomas signed a scholarship to play for the Independence Community College Pirates, located in Independence, Kansas. Thomas, a four year member of the Lady Pels, was the first to sign a volleyball scholarship from Port Allen since 1979.
Of the seven girls selected as All-District last season, only one is returning this year, however Coach Conaway is optimistic about the upcoming season.
“They’re the most open minded team we’ve had in the five years that I’ve been coaching. They’re very open to training. The girls really want to win and improve from last year,” Conaway said.
Of Port Allen’s 16 current members, 10 are returning as juniors and one as a senior, and the team is looking to expand their roster. Volleyball tryouts for freshmen will be held at the high school on August 12th.
The volleyball team will also be hosting an alumni game Friday, August 30.
All former Port Allen High School volleyball players are invited to participate. A special practice will be held for the alumni August 28 and 29. Uniforms will be provided for all participants.
