Monday, September 9th, Brusly’s Lady Panthers defeated McKinley’s Lady Panthers at home.
After the JV volleyball team won two of the three matches, the varsity team dominated by winning three straight matches.
In the first varsity match, McKinley began in the lead 2-1. A tip by Johnee Leblanc earned a point for Brusly, and the team was able to catch up to their opponents 6-6. McKinley was unable to return spikes by Chloe Richard and Bria Granville, however they were able to take a one-point lead again over Brusly, 8-9. The Lady Panthers tied again at 17. With the help of her teammates, who kept the ball in play, Keeley Martin was able to serve up a series of points including one ace. A spike for Shelby Willis and two for Caitlyn Williams brought them to game point. LeBlanc’s tip over the net scored the game winning point and a 25-21 victory in the first match.
McKinley began the second match 3-0, but two spikes by Willis quickly put Brusly on the scoreboard. The ladies gained momentum bringing their lead 8-5. Three spikes by Williams continued Brusly’s scoring streak. With the home team ahead 15-12, McKinley came close to tying it up but Brusly wouldn’t allow it with the score at 19-18.
Another spike by Williams kept Brusly ahead. Williams’ tip over the net earned the game point, and an out of bounds hit by McKinley sealed Brusly’s 25-22 win.
At the start of the final match, Brianna Granville scored the first point with a tip over the net, but McKinley took the lead 2-1. McKinley continued to score five more points while Brusly only gained one, but Brusly didn’t stay behind for long. A block by Williams and LeBlanc scored another point for the home team. LeBlanc earned three points with a series of spikes, tying the game 8-8. Granville’s spike was not returned by the opposition, giving the point to Brusly. Katelyn Brown, Kylie Tolar, and Chloe Richard each earned points with aces, putting Brusly at 18 and McKinley at 11.
After an intensely lengthy volley, McKinley won the point. A kill by Willis kept Brusly in the lead. Richard scored the game winning point, ending the match in a 25-18 win for Brusly.
