Brusly competed in Port Allen’s basketball jamboree Thursday, claiming victories for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
The Lady Panthers played Livonia’s Wildcats and defeated them with a strong showing by Madison LaPrarie and Donkita Williams.
Junior, Madison LaPrarie opened the game with a 1-0 lead after scoring a free throw, which she followed up with a 3-point shot. In the first half of the game, LaPrarie scored eight of the Panthers’ 17 points giving them a 17-2 lead over the Wildcats by halftime.
LaPrarie’s eight first half points were her only points of the game, but were enough to tie the game high with Donkita Williams who quickly gained four points for the Panthers in the second half; however, Livonia came back fighting nearly catching up with Brusly’s 23-21 lead.
With 2 minutes left in the game, Akiya Thymes scored her only two points of the game in a timely fashion, and Kelsey Parker scored the final basket, ensuring the Panthers’ 30-21 victory over the Wildcats.
Parker ended the game with five points. Shedricka Pierson also scored four, while Caitlyn Williams tallied three points in the game.
During the jamboree at Port Allen High School’s gym, the Brusly boys’ team defeated the Dunham Tigers in a very close, low-scoring game.
Jasper Queen scored the first shot of the game, and led the Panthers’ scoring with seven points.
After Queen’s opening score, Dunham scored five unanswered points, but a Queen 3-pointer tied the game 5-5. At the half, Brusly was on top 11-7.
In the second half of play, Dunham came back to tie the game at 13 with four minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers took a 16-13 lead, but Travin Thibodeaux’s layup, his only points of the game, earned two points for the Panthers.
Shawn Freeman scored two and a free throw in the final three seconds, ending the game with an 18-16 win for Brusly.
Freeman finished with five points, while Robert Taylor had four.
