Port Allen’s boys’ basketball team was crowned champions of the White Castle Tournament last week.

“Overall, we played really well,” said Port Allen Head Basketball Coach Brandon Ricard.

“It was good enough to win. We’re maturing a little bit, playing together, and becoming a unit; that’s what we’re looking for.”

The tournament began Monday, November 25th and ended Wednesday, November 27th.

First up to take on the Pelicans were the Donaldsonville Tigers, whom Port Allen defeated 64-50. Top scorers were Nick Parker, Ishmael Lane, and Nigel Allen earning 16, 15, and 12 points, respectively. Parker went on to contribute 10 rebounds and three assists, while Lane had a steal and a block.

After conquering the Tigers, Port Allen battled the Brusly Panthers in a close matchup that pitted the in-parish rivals against one another.

Just before the half, the Panthers came from behind to tie the Pels 27-27, but in the end, it was the Pelicans who got the win, 68-57.

Parker’s double-double lead the team as he scored a whopping 39 points for Port Allen and had 10 rebounds. He also managed three steals, while Nigel Allen had a steal as well. Ishmael Lane had the only Port Allen block of the game.

In the third and final game for the championship, Port Allen faced Plaquemine’s Green Devils where the Pelicans ultimately took the 61-53 victory.

Telson Allen and Nick Parker shared game-high scores, earning 18 points each for the Pels. Lane led the team in rebounds with eaight. Parker and Lane each had one steal, as did Marcus Keyes, while Telson Allen tacked on two steals of his own. Nigel Allen and Adron Franklin each had a block.

“Some of the guys stepped up and made big plays,” said Ricard. “Nick Parker and Nigel Allen really impressed me. Two other guys in particular, Telson Allen and Jordan Morgan, stepped up.”

The Pelicans now hold a 5-0 record. They’re looking to improve their record as they prepare for their next game Wednesday, December 4th against Southern Lab at the Brusly Tournament.
