Lady Pelicans improve to 6-4

The Port Allen Lady Pelicans picked up two more wins last week, but one of them came at a steep price.

PAHS (6-4) posted a win Tuesday in St. Martinville and a victory Thursday at New Roads. 

Port Allen improved to 6-4, but the Lady Pelicans may have lost the services of freshman standout Jalisa Wilson for the duration of the season.

He wants to have a good time and focus on the players in the event, set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Denham Springs High School.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun, but in the end it comes down to very taleneted athletes on both sides of the ball. Teamwork sparks success for Brusly girls

The Brusly girls basketball team is enjoying the benefits that come with experience.

After a lackluster showing last season, the Lady Panthers have posted a 6-4 record, which already tops the showing from the 2011-12 slate.

Coach Liza Whittington’s Lady Panthers posted two wins in single-game action last week and placed third with two of three victories in the University High Classic.

Brusly tops St. Michael for 10th win of season

Brusly Panthers reached the 10-win mark with a win Monday night over St. Michael and a championship finish in the Robert Grace Invitational Tournament at East Iberville.

The defending District 7-3A champions pulled from a one-point deficit for a 62-45 win Monday night over SMHS. 

Dimario Jackson  led with a 26-point showing that included three shots from 3-point range. Teammate Micah Spears posted 15 points, while Jay Christophe  bucketed 10 (including a pair of 3-pointers).

The Warriors took a 12-11 lead in the first quarter, but the Panthers kicked the door down for 23 points in the second quarter and a 34-24 lead at the half.

SMHS outscored Brusly in the third quarter, but the Panthers grinded out 21 more points in the final quarter to put away their 4A opponent.

Jordan Long and David Ventress each had 11 for the Warriros, while Ross Reeder had 10. Long had a trio of 3-point buckets, while Reeder had two and Paul Ragusa had one.

In the Robert Grace Invitational, the Panthers captured the championship after wins over Dutchtown, Family Christian and St. James. 

The Panthers posted a 51-36 win over 7-3A rival St. James to take the tournament title.

Christophe paced the Panthers with 19 points, while Jackson had 13. Jackson went 5-for-5 at the free throw line.

Brusly rallied for 16 points in the third quarter and 17 in the fourth to stave off St. James.

The Panthers lead 18-14 at the half after they broke loose from a 10-10 tie in the opening quarter.

Jackson powered Brusly with 25 points in the 53-43 victory over Dutchtown. The Panthers pulled from a 19-18 halftime deficit to take the win.

Jackson went 13-for-14 at the line for the Panthers, including an 8-for-8 showing in the final quarter.

Christophe scored 16 for the Panthers.

Spears led the pack with 22 points in a wild 90-58 win over Family Christian, one of the top Class B teams in the state.

Jackson netted 19 points, Trayvon Thibodeaux had 16 and Donald Williams 10.

Williams had the lone three-point shot in the tame. 

The Panthers opened with a 23-14 lead in the first against the Flames, coached for former PAHS girls mentor James Holmes.

Brusly led 23-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Panthers churned out 23 points in the final stanza.

COMING UP … Brusly faces Baton Rouge area power Madison Prep on Saturday and hosts West Feliciana Dec. 20 The Panthers visit Pointe Coupee Central on Dec. 21 and close out 2012 in the Madison Prep Tournament Dec. 27-29 at Family Christian Academy.
