Jesus met a woman who came to drink frequently from a well she called “our father Jacob’s” well.
This natural well was a type of the old, antiquated, bitter, and dry fountain.
Jesus also perceived she failed miserably in relationships.
He stated “the fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.”
Are you singing that song, “Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places”?
Jesus also heard her criticize religion when she complained, “Our fathers worship on a mountain, but you, Jews... worship in Jerusalem.”
Alarmed at her defensiveness, depression, and isolation, Jesus replied, “You worship what you do not know.”
What a bummer, she had religion with no understanding! This lady believed in God but was always waiting on God to help her.
She said, “When He (God) comes, He will tell us all things.”
Sounds like the pie in the sky of a far away guy. Mrs. Debbie Depression had no clue truth was staring her in the face to transform her situation.
Jesus said, “I who speak to you am He. (God)” She got so excited, now her eyes were open to who Jesus was “she dropped her pot, went her way into the city and said . . . come and see a man.”
For the first time she experienced the “perfect love” of God which “casts out all fear” and “covers a multitude of sins.”
I am amazed at the time, money, emotions, and energy wasted by Christians! They make independent attempts to satiate their inner desires and longings by fulfillment from natural wells. Despite their best efforts and sincerity of heart, they fall into the same continuous patterns and habits which only produce bad cases of condemnation and shame. All along they know it’s a dead-end road and it’s not right!
If you can relate, you are also drinking from the wrong well, drop your pot! Get away from the well of the past, contaminating relationships, and powerless religion.
STOP deceiving yourself and quit violating God’s unconditional love for you.
Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." John 4:13-14
Only Jesus can fill those deep life cravings that reside on the inside!
