The Brusly High Alumni Association held their first annual Battle of the Westside Basketball Tournament last Saturday, Aug. 5 in the Brusly High School gym to benefit the association’s annual Brusly High Scholarship Fund.
Besides alumni from Brusly, basketball players from Port Allen, Donaldsonville, Plaquemine and White Castle were invited to form their own alumni teams to see who really was the best on the West Side.
“The Battle Of The Westside Alumni Basketball Tournament was an absolutely phenomenal event,” organizer Kevin Deloch said. “The alumni committee worked extremely hard on making sure everything went according to plan”
The Brusly High alumni had two teams in the double-elimination tournament: an under 35 team and an over 35 team.
After some close games, it came down to the final between the Under 35 Brusly alumni team and the Plaquemine alumni. The game went into overtime and saw the Green Devil alumni come out on top by two points to win the inaugural trophy.
“I’m still getting calls and text messages from people around the community congratulating us for bringing the tournament to Brusly. Preparations are already being made for next year’s tournament,” Deloch said. “I’d like to thank all the schools that were involved in the tournament. They played a major role in our success.”
