It is time to for the Brusly Lady Panthers track team to defend their championship title.
The Brusly girls qualified and will be heading to the LHSAA High School Indoor State Track Championship Meet on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the B. Moore Track & C. Maddox Field House at LSU.
Both the 4×200 and 4X400 relay teams will be back to make the run for the gold.
The lineup will be a mixture of Ta’la Spates, Mackenzie Jenkins, Bran’Neicia Williams, Derneisha Johnson, and Jakiyah Joseph, coach Trent Ellis said.
The Brusly girls are known for their relay teams, but there will be a strong showing of Lady Panthers in multiple other events as well.
Tia Young will compete in triple jump and Derneisha Johnson in the high jump. Freshman Hannah Pedigo will compete in her first high school state track meet in the pole vault.
In the running events, Bran’Nicia WIlliams will run in the 60m hurdles, Ta’la Spates in 60m and 400m, and Mackenzie Jenkins in the 60m and 400m.
Coach Ellis knows what kind of “hurdle” it will be to defend his team’s championship, and in reality, has had the goal of a “Top 5” finish all year as they begin moving to the outdoor season.
“We will actually be transitioning to outdoor training and working in some relay exchanges in preparation for the added events outside,” Ellis said. “It’s a longer season, so we will still get our training in for the state meet, as well as the added components of the outdoor season that are right around the corner.”
