On Saturday June 13th and Sunday June 14th from 10 am to 4 pm, Yes We Cannibal hosts our first annual Plant Fundraiser. Yes We Cannibal is a new community space for art, research, and music at the corner of 16th and Government in the Mid-West neighborhood of Baton Rouge. The Plant Fundraiser offers a curated mix of seedlings and plants for the summer garden in exchange for donations that support the establishment of this new community space. Originally slated to open in May, COVID-19 has disrupted our plans and programming, which included a reading and discussion series, film screenings, artists’ talks, non-traditional art classes for kids and musical performance. The event will be held in our outdoor front lot. Masks and social distancing are encouraged. Donation by Venmo or PayPal is encouraged when possible. Plants will not be sold but will be exchanged for fixed donations to Yes We Cannibal. We have grown heirloom tomatoes and hot peppers for summer gardens as well as a series of more novel plants, selected to symbolize our founding spirit of experiment and possibility. Some of the more unusual plants on offer include Mimosa pudica aka Sensitive Plants which respond to touch, Codariocalyx motorius, aka Telegraph Plants, capable of rapid movement, Nicotiana tabacum from which smoking tobacco is produced but is also sacred to numerous Indigenous peoples, Acmella oleracea aka Toothache Plants or Electric Daisies which release a mild non-toxic anaesthetic when chewed, Echinacea purpurea aka Purple Coneflowers used in herbal medicine, as well as several other specimens. While first preparing plants for this event, founders Mat Keel and Liz Lessner were devastated to discover that several hundred tomato seedlings had been stolen from our back lot. But soon heartbreak gave way to inspiration and the founders realized that this little act of theft reflected the very same sort of disconnection between strangers that Yes We Cannibal most wants to challenge. “I would like nothing more than for those people to come by and meet us sometime - to see what worlds we can build together,” said Keel. Yes We Cannibal is a counter-institution that offers an open home for unrestricted and non-hierarchical cultural experimentation in the areas of art, food, research and performance. It enables collaborative experiments in new ways of anti-fascist living. Open to all, most programming is free and anyone is welcome to propose or lead a class, workshop or event. We are slated to open fully in mid-July 2020.
