Port Allen Middle School Principal Jessica Lambert Major was named a semifinalist for the 2020 Louisiana Principal of the Year award given by the Louisiana Department of Education.
Major is among 24 Principal of the Year semi-finalists, who will be honored at the 13th Annual Cecil. J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration on Friday, July 19 in Baton Rouge.
The 2020 Louisiana Principal and Teacher of the Year will be named during the July 19 ceremony.
West Baton Rouge Parish Schools already boasts the 2018 Louisiana State Teacher of the Year, Kimberly Eckert, an educator at Brusly High School. In 2017, Devall Middle School Principal Laree Taylor was named a semi-finalst for Principal of the Year.
"Mrs. Major is passionate, hard working, caring, and always looks for ways to help all of her students succeed," School Board Superintendent Wes Watts said. "She is very deserving of this honor and would be a great State Principal of the Year."
According to the Department of Education, Louisiana State Principal and Teacher of the year must:
Demonstrate excellence in the field, guiding students of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve academic and life-long success.
Demonstrates leadership and innovation in and outside of the school building walls and engage with various stakeholders in ways which help students and teachers be successful.
Express themselves in an engaging and articulate way and is involved in work that adds value to the profession.
