The Port Allen Pelicans gave the undefeated Rosepine Eagles all they could handle but came up short, falling 20-14 in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs in Rosepine.
The Eagles held a 12-0 lead before the Pelicans responded with 14 unanswered points.
The game-winning score came with 2:15 remaining thanks to a 28-yard touchdown pass from Kaleb Clause to quarterback Seth Ducote on a jet reverse pass.
Rosepine running back Seth Shirley got his team on the board early with a 5-yard touchdown run at the 10:19 mark in the first quarter.
Ducote put the Eagles up 12-0 with a 1-yard quarterback run early in the second quarter, but Port Allen running back Edward Wilson scored on a 5-yard run with 3:32 left in the first half to the Pelicans on the board.
With a minute left before halftime, Port Allen quarterback Jeremiah Dehon hit Le’Kelvin Battiste for a 52-yard pass to take a 14-12 lead at the break.
Rosepine, known for its potent rushing attack, was held in check by the Port Allen defense. The Eagles rushed for 195 yards but needed 52 attempts to do so.
Wilson led the Pelicans’ rushing attack with 81 yards on 13 attempts.
Dehon completed 7-of-20 passes for 101 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Battiste was the leading receiver with four receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown.
